Chapter 10
Jay
Once Levi left, I fumed around my humble abode slamming dishes into the dishwasher, slinging wet clothes from the washing machine to the dryer, and pacing in front of my couch. After about an hour, I realized I was doing absolutely nothing but irritating myself even more. I flipped through my phone, pissy that I couldn’t even find a song that spoke to me. Fifteen minutes later, after trying to lose myself in music and dance, I finally gave up. I was a mess if I couldn’t even find respite in my art.
After a shower and an angry cleaning of my apartment, I jetted from my place and stalked toward Micah’s mechanic shop. Before his dad died, the business was Ed’s Autos but Micah had recently christened it with a new name and a new sign. Edwards Autos had a gleaming new paint job, glistening new waiting room with comfy chairs, water and coffee for customers, and a small television in the lobby. Micah was working hard to erase the stain of hatred and bigotry his father had left on the shop over the years.
Glancing at my watch, I realized it was lunchtime as I walked past the B & B. But, Levi’s truck was there, so I bypassed the place and hoped that Micah’s vending machine had some decent choices.
Stepping into the shop, I was surrounded by the scent of rubber, oil, and gasoline.
Randy, a gruff looking, but very friendly bearded man sat behind the front counter. “Howdy. What can I do ya for?”
That type of question from a big bear of a man would have sent me into major flirt mode at one point in my life. But, even as upset as I was with Levi, I could only muster a sincere smile at Randy. “Is Micah in?”
“Yeah, he’s in his office with Cole. You want I should let him know you’re here?” Randy stood and wiped his hands on his pants.
He was definitely a mechanic. I could tell by the grease stains on his shirt and pants. A sub sandwich sat on the desk so I assumed he was eating lunch while covering for Sadie, Cody’s sister. She worked the front counter for extra money between college classes.
“Yeah, would you, please?” I glanced down at Randy’s lunch and my damn stomach chose that time to gurgle loudly.
Randy went through the door, and I heard him holler, “Yo, Micah! You got a man here to see ya.” When he came back to the front, Randy carried a package. “He said to come on back.” Holding the package out to me, Randy blushed. “The sub shop messed up my order. They tried to give me a meat lovers when I ordered a damn veggie sub.”
“Nah, I can’t take your lunch.” I shook my head and held up a hand in protest even though the sandwich sounded fabulous.
“Seriously, I’m a vegetarian. There’s no way I’ll eat this. The girl behind the counter begged me to take it so the manager didn’t know she’d screwed up.
